We are seeking an internationally recognized scientist in the field of Global Change Biology to represent this subject in research and teaching. The successful candidate will have proven expertise in macroecology with a focus on the influence of climate change, environmental degradation, pollution or land use on the biology of species or the ecology of communities. Possible research topics include interactions between environmental drivers, microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles, biological feedback on climate change, biological sinks and sources of atmospheric trace gases, mechanisms of species and ecosystem resilience, global biodiversity issues, biological adaptations and invasive species. It is desirable that a link to contemporary sustainability concepts, e.g. the concept of multispecies sustainability, will be established. Depending on the focus, experimental and model-based work is possible.


A broad network in sustainability research is desired within and outside the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (https://www.uni-kassel.de/fb10/). Further possible points of contact are the Department of Organic Agricultural Sciences (www.uni-kassel.de/fb11agrar/), the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning (https://www.uni-kassel.de/fb06/), or the sustainability-related activities at the School of Art and Design.


The Kassel Institute for Sustainability is the scientific center for sustainability at the University of Kassel, where up to 17 new SDG professorships will combine their expertise while being structurally linked to the departments. The professorship is expected to provide 50% of the teaching in the newly emerging sustainability-related degree programs and 50% of the teaching in the department in German and English. The professorship is based at the Kassel Institute. In addition, the SDG professorships are expected to actively and significantly organize the cooperation between departments and the Kassel Institute in research and teaching. Experience in teaching and in acquiring third-party funded research projects is required.

The hiring requirements and performance standards according to §§ 67, 68 HessHG apply. Qualifications are demonstrated through habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements.
